When He becomes Merciful, then the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is found; servant Nanak meditates on God. ||8||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the One became kind, I found the Sangat — the people who help us remember.

Nanak, the servant, says: there my heart turns to the One and rests.

Grace leads us into the Sangat, and there the heart finds its rest.
The deeper layer

When the One is kind, we find the Sangat, and there the heart turns to the One.

Ja-o bha-i-o kirpaal — when the One became merciful. Taa saadhsang paa-i-aa — then the saadhsang was found: the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One. Jan naanak barahm dhi-aa-i-o — and Nanak, the servant, rests his mind on the One.

The whole song lands softly. Everything comes by grace. Grace leads us to people who help us remember. It is like a friend who sits with you and helps you finish hard homework. The Sangat makes the good path easier.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people in your life who help you remember what matters most?
