The Only Asking Worth Doing

ਮਾਗਨਾ ਮਾਗਨੁ ਨੀਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਮਾਗਨਾ ॥੪॥
maagnaa maagan neekaa har jas gur tay maagnaa. ||4||
Begging, begging - it is noble to beg for the Lord's Praise from the Guru. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

To ask, to ask: the finest asking is to ask the Guru for the gift of praising the One.

Of all the things you could want, this is the good one to reach for.

The best thing to ask for is a heart that loves to praise.
The deeper layer

The best thing to ask for is the gift of praising the One.

Maagnaa means asking, even begging. The word is doubled, like a chant. Har jas gur tay maagnaa: ask the Guru for har jas, the praise of the One.

Most asking is for things: a new game, a bigger slice, a later bedtime. This asking is different. It asks for a heart that loves and praises. Think of asking a music teacher not for a trophy, but for the joy of playing. That joy lasts longer than any prize.

The Guru is the teacher, and the teaching turns the heart toward wonder.

A Question to Sit With

If you could ask for one gift for your heart, what would it be?
