The Wakeful Night Spent in Song

ਜਾਗਨਾ ਜਾਗਨੁ ਨੀਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਗਨਾ ॥੫॥
jaagnaa jaagan neekaa har keertan meh jaagnaa. ||5||
Vigils, vigils - sublime is the vigil spent singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

To stay awake, to stay awake: sweet is the night spent singing the praises of the One.

When song fills the hours, even a long night feels bright.

A night filled with song is a night well spent.
The deeper layer

The best way to stay awake at night is singing the One's praises.

Jaagnaa means staying awake, keeping watch. The word is doubled, like a chant. Har keertan meh jaagnaa: stay awake in kirtan, singing songs of praise together.

A night awake can be full of worry. Here it is filled with music instead. Think of a family night when everyone stays up late singing around the table. No one watches the clock. The hours feel warm and shared.

So the wakeful night becomes a gift, not a burden.

A Question to Sit With

What song lifts you up when you cannot sleep?
