The One Attachment That Sets You Free

ਲਾਗਨਾ ਲਾਗਨੁ ਨੀਕਾ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗਨਾ ॥੬॥
laagnaa laagan neekaa gur charnee man laagnaa. ||6||
Attachment, attachment - sublime is the attachment of the mind to the Guru's Feet. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

To hold close, to hold close: the one closeness that frees you is holding to the Guru's way.

Some things you cling to trap you; holding to the Guru opens you up.

The one thing worth holding tight is what sets you free.
The deeper layer

There is one kind of holding on that sets you free: holding on to the Guru's way.

Laagnaa means being attached, holding on close. The word is doubled, like a chant. Gur charnee man laagnaa: let the mind hold close to the Guru's feet. The Guru's feet stand for the Guru's teaching, the path the Guru walks.

Here is the twist. Holding on usually ties us down. We cling to things and feel stuck. But holding on to the true thing loosens the grip of everything else. Think of a climber holding a strong safety rope. The rope does not trap the climber. It lets them move freely up the wall.

A Question to Sit With

What do you hold onto that helps you, not hurts you?
