Please come, O please come into the home of my heart, that I may hear with my ears the Lord's Praises. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Please come, please come and live in the home of my heart,

so that my ears fill with the praises of the One.

An open heart is an invitation the One always answers.
The deeper layer

An open door and a warm call: "Please come into the home of my heart."

This line is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole shabad, and everything after it grows out of it.

Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru, opens the door and calls, "Come, please come!" He is calling the Beloved One. He is also calling the good and loving people who carry the One's praises. He wants his ears filled with those praises.

Think of waiting at the window for a favorite cousin to arrive. You keep looking down the street. The moment the car pulls up, you run to open the door.

The rest of the shabad tells what happens once that guest steps inside.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to open your heart like a door?
