Verse 8 of 9

Empty-Handed, Yet Taken In

I am unworthy; no one gives me sanctuary. But in the Society of the Saints, I merge in God. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I come with empty hands, sure I have little to offer, and no one else takes me in.

Yet in the Sangat, I am taken in and joined to the One.

You do not need full hands to be welcomed in.
The deeper layer

You are welcome even when you come with empty hands.

Mohi nirgun: "I, with no good qualities of my own." That is an honest way of saying, "I have nothing to bring." It is not beating yourself up. It is simply standing there with open, empty hands.

And yet, santaa sang samaavanaa: in the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One — that person is taken in and joined to the One.

Think of arriving at a friend's birthday party and realizing you forgot the present. Your friend just grabs your hand and pulls you inside. They are glad you came.

Grace does not check what you have at the door. It welcomes you in.

A Question to Sit With

Can you let yourself be welcomed even when you feel small?
