Fruitful is the life, the life of one who hears about the Lord, and chants and meditates on Him; he lives forever. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

A life bears fruit when it hears of the One.

Say the Naam again and again, and you live on forever.

A life bears fruit by what it remembers, not what it collects.
The deeper layer

A life bears fruit when it listens for the One and keeps the One in mind.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Jeevnaa safal means a life that bears fruit. A life like that is not measured by what it collects. It is measured by what it remembers. What is held in the Name outlasts everything else.

Think of a tree. People remember it for its fruit, not for how many leaves it had. The rest of this shabad takes simple daily things, like drinking, eating and clothes, and finds the Name inside each one.

A Question to Sit With

What makes a day feel full to you?
