ਪੀਵਨਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਮਨੁ ਆਘਾਵੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਨਾ ॥੧॥
peevnaa jit man aaghaavai naam amrit ras peevnaa. ||1||
The real drink is that which satisfies the mind; this drink is the sublime essence of the Ambrosial Naam. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The drink worth drinking is the one that satisfies the mind:
the sweet essence of the Naam, which leaves no thirst behind.
The drink that satisfies the mind never leaves you thirsty.
The best drink is the one that finally makes the mind feel full.
Naam amrit ras means the sweet, life-giving taste of the Name. Most drinks help for an hour, and then we are thirsty again. Guru Arjan takes this everyday need and turns it inward. The Name settles the restless mind for good.
Think of a cold glass of water after a long run. Now imagine one sip that keeps you from ever feeling that thirst again. That is the drink the verse means.
A Question to Sit With
