Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 82
Verse 2 of 16

You Set Each of Us on Our Own Path

ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਆਪਿ ਖਪਾਏ ॥
aap upaa-ay aap khapaa-ay.
You Yourself create, and You Yourself destroy.
ਆਪੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਧੰਧੈ ਲਾਏ ॥
aapay sir sir DhanDhai laa-ay.
You yourself link each and every person to their tasks.
ਆਪੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ਆਪੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥
aapay veechaaree gunkaaree aapay maarag laa-ee hay. ||2||
You contemplate Yourself, You Yourself make us worthy; You Yourself place us on the Path. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You bring things into being, and You let them return home again.

You give each of us our own work to do, no two exactly alike.

You are the One who makes me ready and worthy, and who sets my feet on the path, so I am never walking alone.

The One who gives me my work also gives me what I need to do it.
The deeper layer

The One is the source of every arising and every returning, and gives each being its task and its readiness. No one walks the Path alone; the same One who hands out the work also equips the walker.

A Question to Sit With

What is a task that feels like it is yours to do?
