Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 86
Verse 6 of 16

Without the Name, Even Sweet Things Turn Flat

ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਠਗੀ ਠਗਵਾੜੀ ॥
koorh muthee thagee thagvaarhee.
The false are cheated, and robbed by the robbers.
ਜਿਉ ਵਾੜੀ ਓਜਾੜਿ ਉਜਾੜੀ ॥
ji-o vaarhee ojaarh ujaarhee.
The garden is laid waste, like the rough wilderness.
naam binaa kichh saad na laagai har bisri-ai dukh paa-ee hay. ||6||
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, nothing tastes sweet; forgetting the Lord, they suffer in sorrow. ||6||

In plain words

When I chase only what is not real, I can end up feeling emptied out, like a garden gone to weeds.

Without the Name, nothing quite tastes sweet.

But the moment I remember the One, the flavor of life comes back.

When the Name is forgotten, even sweet things go flat; remembering brings the flavor back.
The deeper layer

Without the Name, even sweet things taste flat.

Koorh muthee thagee thagvaarhee — falseness gets robbed and cheated by the cheats. A life built on what is not real ends up emptied out. Ji-o vaarhee ojaarh ujaarhee — like a garden turned into a wild, empty patch.

Naam binaa kichh saad na laagai — without the Name, nothing tastes good. Har bisri-ai dukh paa-ee — forgetting the One brings sorrow. Think of your favorite meal when you have a bad cold. The food is the same, but the flavor is gone. Remembering the One brings the flavor back.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that only tastes good, or feels good, when you pay attention to it?
