Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 86
Verse 8 of 16

Cleverness Alone Cannot Settle the Heart

naavhu bhulee chotaa khaa-ay.
Wandering from the Name, he endures beatings.
bahut si-aanap bharam na jaa-ay.
Even great cleverness does not dispel doubt.
The unconscious fool does not remain conscious of the Lord; he putrifies and rots away to death, carrying his heavy load of sin. ||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When I drift far from the Name, life can feel like a series of hard knocks.

Even being very clever does not clear away my doubt.

And carrying old worries around only makes the load feel heavier; remembering the One is what sets it down.

Cleverness cannot settle the heart; only remembrance sets the load down.
The deeper layer

Cleverness, however great, cannot settle doubt. Drifting from the Naam brings hard knocks and a heavy load; remembering the One lightens it.

A Question to Sit With

When has being clever not been enough, and something calmer helped more?
