In plain words

Whoever crosses to peace does not go alone; they lift up their whole family, even those who came before.

Their companions are freed and carried across too.

Nanak says: I am the humble servant of anyone who, through the Guru, fixes their love on the One.

Finding peace is never just for me; it lifts everyone around me too.
The deeper layer

When someone finds the One, they do not cross alone; they bring others with them.

Aap tarai means they cross over themselves. Jan pitraa taaray means they help their family cross too, even those who came before. Their sangat, here their companions, the people around them, are freed and carried across as well.

Think of the first kid in a family who learns to swim. Soon they are teaching their brothers, sisters and cousins. This solha, a long song in sixteen parts, ends with Nanak calling himself laalaa golaa, a humble servant. He means wholehearted honor for anyone whose love is fixed on the One.

A Question to Sit With

How could your own calm and kindness help the people closest to you?
