Reading and studying, they burn, and do not find tranquility.

Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, praise the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Lord, the Supreme Soul, shall be your helper and companion. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Let me set down speaking badly of others and envying what they have.

Just piling up facts, with a restless heart, never brings calm.

Joining the Sangat and praising the Naam, I find the One becomes my helper and friend.

Letting go of comparing and envy makes room for real friendship.
The deeper layer

Slander and envy (nindaa, taat) are named as burdens to release. Mere book-learning without peace is contrasted with the Sangat (satsangat) and love, where the One becomes companion.

A Question to Sit With

How does comparing yourself to others usually make you feel?
