Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 88
Verse 13 of 16

A Full Table Is Not a Full Heart

ਖਾਜੈ ਪੈਝੈ ਰਲੀ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
khaajai paijhai ralee kareejai.
She eats, dresses and plays joyfully,
ਬਿਨੁ ਅਭ ਭਗਤੀ ਬਾਦਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
bin abh bhagtee baad mareejai.
but without loving devotional worship of the Lord, she dies uselessly.
ਸਰ ਅਪਸਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥
sar apsar kee saar na jaanai jam maaray ki-aa chaaraa hay. ||13||
One who does not distinguish between good and evil, is beaten by the Messenger of Death; how can anyone escape this? ||13||

In plain words

You can eat well, dress well, and play happily — and all of that is good.

Yet a life lived only on the surface can still leave the heart hungry for what matters.

Learning to tell the kind path from the unkind, the lasting from the fading — that is what makes a life whole. Love for the One is what fills it.

A comfortable life and a full heart are not the same thing.
The deeper layer

Khaajai paijhai ralee kareejai — eating, dressing, having fun. All of it is good, and none of it fills the heart on its own. Bhagtee, loving devotion, is what fills it, and sar apsar kee saar, knowing good from harmful, is part of growing whole.

A Question to Sit With

What fills your heart in a way that snacks and new things never quite do?
