Do Not Call Anyone Else Bad

ਪਰਵਿਰਤੀ ਨਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥

associating with the Guru, comes to know the Word of the Shabad, within the home of his own self.
ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਮੰਦਾ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਸਚਿ ਖਰਾ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥
kis hee mandaa aakh na chalai sach kharaa sachi-aaraa hay. ||14||
Do not call anyone else bad; follow this way of life. Those who are true are judged to be genuine by the True Lord. ||14||

In plain words

Wisdom is learning what is worth keeping and what is worth setting down.

Staying close to the Guru, you find the Word already living inside your own heart — you did not have to travel far.

And here is a bright rule to live by: never call anyone else bad. Walk this way, and the True One knows you as true.

Never calling anyone else bad is one of the truest things you can do.
The deeper layer

Kis hee mandaa aakh na chalai — do not go around calling anyone bad. It is one of Guru Nanak's clearest rules for daily life. The person who refuses to belittle others is the one the True One counts as true (sach kharaa sachi-aaraa).

A Question to Sit With

When is it tempting to put someone down, and what could you do instead?
