Body and Soul, Companions for a Season

ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
kaa-i-aa hans pareet baho Dhaaree.
The body has developed a great love for the soul-swan.
ਓਹੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਓਹ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

He is a Yogi, and she is a beautiful woman.

Day and night, he enjoys her with delight, and then he arises and departs without consulting her. ||6||

In plain words

The body and the living soul become dear companions, sharing every day together.

For a whole lifetime they keep close company, delighting in the world side by side.

Then, when the time is right, the soul quietly rises and continues on its journey — gently, the way a traveler moves toward home.

Body and soul are traveling companions for one precious season.
The deeper layer

Kaa-i-aa hans pareet baho Dhaaree — the body grows very fond of the soul-swan. The two share every day like dear companions. Then the soul rises and moves on, uth chaltai, and continues its journey toward home.

A Question to Sit With

What makes you treasure time with a companion you know you will not always be beside?
