Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 89
Verse 8 of 17

The Heart Is a Fish That Longs for Its Water

naam visaar dokh dukh sahee-ai.
Forgetting the Naam, one suffers the misery of his evil ways.
hukam bha-i-aa chalnaa ki-o rahee-ai.
When the order to depart is issued, how can he remain here?
narak koop meh gotay khaavai ji-o jal tay baahar meenaa hay. ||8||
He falls into the pit of hell, and suffers like a fish out of water. ||8||

In plain words

When we forget the One, we drift into needless hard days of our own making.

None of us stays in this world forever; the day comes to move on.

A heart without the Name is like a fish out of its stream, gasping and unsettled. The good news is simple: slip back into the water of the Name, and you can breathe again.

A heart away from the Name gasps like a fish; return to the water and breathe.
The deeper layer

Ji-o jal tay baahar meenaa — like a fish out of water. The heart's water is the Naam. Away from it, the heart gasps; back in it, the heart breathes easy again.

A Question to Sit With

What is the water your heart feels most alive in?
