Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 90
Verse 12 of 17

Let the Water Soak Into the Stone

khayhoo khayh ralai tan chheejai.
Dust mixes with dust, when the body wastes away.
manmukh paathar sail na bheejai.
The self-willed manmukh is like a stone slab, which is impervious to water.
karan palaav karay bahutayray narak surag avtaaraa hay. ||12||
He cries out and weeps and wails; he is reincarnated into heaven and then hell. ||12||

In plain words

One day this body returns to the earth it came from — that is simply nature's way.

A heart closed tight can be like a smooth stone that water rolls right off of, never soaking in.

Yet a heart can change. Soften just a little, and the water of love soaks all the way through.

A heart can always soften; let a little love soak in.
The deeper layer

Manmukh paathar sail na bheejai — the self-facing mind is like a stone slab that water cannot soak. Khayhoo khayh ralai, dust returns to dust, and the closed heart stays dry the whole time. Once it softens, the water gets in.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your heart soften when it has gone a little hard?
