Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 90
Verse 13 of 17

What Satisfies the Soul

ਮਾਇਆ ਬਿਖੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਮ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
maa-i-aa bikh bhu-i-angam naalay.
They live with the poisonous snake of Maya.
ਇਨਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਘਰ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਗਾਲੇ ॥
in dubiDhaa ghar bahutay gaalay.
This duality has ruined so many homes.
satgur baajhahu pareet na upjai bhagat ratay patee-aaraa hay. ||13||
Without the True Guru, love does not well up. Imbued with devotional worship, the soul is satisfied. ||13||

In plain words

Living only for the things that glitter can slowly unsettle a home.

Feeling cut off and separate has pulled many people apart from one another.

With the True Guru, love wells up inside; and a soul filled with that love is finally, deeply content.

Love, more than any glittering thing, is what satisfies the soul.
The deeper layer

Chasing only shiny things can pull people apart, but loving the One fills the soul.

Maa-i-aa is the pull of things, money and show. The verse calls it bhu-i-angam, a poisonous snake that lives right beside us. Dubidhaa means feeling split in two, cut off from the One and from each other. It has ghar bahutay gaalay, broken many homes.

Without the True Guru, love does not grow. With bhagat, loving devotion, the soul is patee-aaraa, finally satisfied. Think of a family arguing over who gets the bigger room. Loving each other would fill them far more than any room could. Devotion is the cure for haumai, the lonely feeling of "only me."

A Question to Sit With

What leaves you feeling full and content inside?
