Chasing Shadows Never Brings Peace

saakat maa-i-aa ka-o baho Dhaaveh.
The faithless cynics chase after Maya.
naam visaar kahaa sukh paavahi.
Forgetting the Naam, how can they find peace?
tarihu gun antar khapeh khapaaveh naahee paar utaaraa hay. ||14||
In the three qualities, they are destroyed; they cannot cross over to the other side. ||14||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When a heart chases only passing things, peace stays just out of reach.

Forgetting the Naam, how could calm ever arrive?

Tossed about by every changing mood, it is hard to cross to steadier ground — so let the Naam be the anchor that steadies you.

Chasing passing things never brings peace; the Name is the anchor that does.
The deeper layer

Tarihu gun, the three qualities, pull the mind through changing moods and keep it from crossing over. Naam visaar kahaa sukh paavahi — forgetting the Naam, where is peace? The Naam is the anchor that steadies the mind.

A Question to Sit With

What is your anchor when your moods keep shifting around?
