manmukh anDhulay sojhee naahee.
The blind, self-willed manmukh does not understand.
aavahi jaahi mareh mar jaahee.
He comes and goes in reincarnation, dying, and dying again.
poorab likhi-aa laykh na mit-ee jam dar anDh khu-aaraa hay. ||3||
The primal inscription of destiny cannot be erased. The spiritually blind suffer terribly at Death's door. ||3||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
A mind turned only toward its own small self keeps missing the bigger truth.
It circles round and round, never quite arriving.
The pattern feels set. The moment understanding dawns, the circling can gently come to rest.
A mind turned only inward on itself keeps missing the way home.
The manmukh, the self-facing mind, aavahi jaahi — comes and goes. Without sojhee, understanding, it circles round and round. Understanding is what brings the circling to rest.
A Question to Sit With
What helps you look up and out when you are stuck circling one worry?
