Verse 17 of 17

Leaning on the Guru, Carried Across

har gur pooray kee ot paraatee.
I seek the support of the Perfect Guru, the Lord.
gurmukh har liv gurmukh jaatee.
The Gurmukh loves the Lord; the Gurmukh realizes the Lord.
naanak raam naam mat ootam har bakhsay paar utaaraa hay. ||17||4||10||
O Nanak, through the Lord's Name, the intellect is exalted; granting His forgiveness, the Lord carries him across to the other side. ||17||4||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I lean my whole weight on the Perfect Guru, the One.

The Gurmukh loves the One; the Gurmukh comes to know the One.

Nanak says: through the Naam, the mind is lifted and made bright; and in pure grace, the One carries us gently across.

Lean your whole weight on the Guru, and be carried gently across.
The deeper layer

Everything rests on the gur pooray, the Perfect Guru. The gurmukh loves and comes to know the One; through the Naam the mat (intellect) becomes ootam (exalted), and the One, forgiving (bakhsay), carries the soul across.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you feel safe leaning your whole weight on?
