Verse 12 of 17

A Friend Here and Everywhere After

satgur baajh na baylee ko-ee.
Other than the True Guru, no one is your friend.
aithai othai raakhaa parabh so-ee.
Here and hereafter, God is the Savior.
raam naam dayvai kar kirpaa i-o sallai salal milaataa hay. ||12||
He grants His Grace, and bestows the Lord's Name. He merges with Him, like water with water. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When it comes to the deepest things, there is no friend like the True Guru.

Here and in whatever comes next, the One is the one who lifts and saves us.

In grace it gives the Name, and gathers us into itself the way a drop of water melts into the sea.

The One is a friend here and everywhere after.
The deeper layer

The One is raakhaa (protector) aithai othai — here and hereafter. By grace the One gives the Naam and merges the soul sallai salal — water into water, an image of union.

A Question to Sit With

Who is a friend you feel would be with you no matter where you went?
