The Fortress Within the Body

maaroo mehlaa 1 dakh-nee.
Maaroo, First Mehl, Dakhanee:
kaa-i-aa nagar nagar garh andar.
Deep within the body-village is the fortress.
saachaa vaasaa pur gagnandar.
The dwelling of the True Lord is within the city of the Tenth Gate.
asthir thaan sadaa nirmaa-il aapay aap upaa-idaa. ||1||
This place is permanent and forever immaculate. He Himself created it. ||1||

In plain words

Inside you there is a hidden city, and your own body is its walls and gates.

Deep in the highest room of that city, in a place beyond all your busy thoughts, the True One makes a home.

That home never crumbles and never grows dirty. The One built it, and the One keeps it shining.

The One you are looking for already lives inside you.
The deeper layer

Dakhanee is a southern dialect, and its flavor runs through the whole hymn. The 'Tenth Gate' (dasvaa duaar) is the inner doorway of awareness: the body has nine visible openings, and this is the tenth, hidden one. 'Gagnandar' is the sky-city, the open space of pure consciousness. The divine lives within the human body itself, nearer than any distant temple.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go quiet enough to notice the still place inside you?
