Verse 12 of 16

Everyone Says It, Few Understand

vadaa vadaa aakhai sabh ko-ee.
Everyone calls Him the greatest of the great.
gur bin sojhee kinai na ho-ee.
Without the Guru, no one understands Him.
saach milai so saachay bhaa-ay naa veechhurh dukh paa-idaa. ||12||
The True Lord is pleased with those who merge in Truth; they are not separated again, and they do not suffer. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everyone calls the One the greatest of the great.

But without the Guru, no one understands what that means.

Those who blend their lives into the truth are never left out in the cold again, and their aching for home is over.

Saying the One is great and knowing it are two different things.
The deeper layer

'Sojhee' is deep understanding, which comes through the Guru. The pain of separation (vichhurh dukh) is like being left out in the cold, and its ending is coming home for good.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you say you understand but want to understand more deeply?
