naa ko mulaa naa ko kaajee.
There was no Mullah, there was no Qazi.
naa ko saykh masaa-ik haajee.
There was no Shaykh, or pilgrims to Mecca.
ra-ee-at raa-o na ha-umai dunee-aa naa ko kahan kahaa-idaa. ||11||
There was no king or subjects, and no worldly egotism; no one spoke of himself. ||11||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
There was no Mullah and no judge of the law.
There was no Shaykh and no pilgrims setting out for Mecca.
There were no kings and no subjects, no one puffed up with 'look at me', no one boasting of himself.
Every religion's leaders came later; before all of them there was one shared Source.
The Mullah, the Qazi, the Shaykh and the pilgrimage to Mecca came later too, standing right beside the forms of the verse before. Side by side, every religious office is a later human form, and each is named with respect.
A Question to Sit With
If everyone's traditions came from the same beginning, what does that say about how they belong together?
