Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 96
Verse 10 of 16

No Temple Yet, No Shrine Yet

ਵਰਨ ਭੇਖ ਨਹੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ॥
varan bhaykh nahee barahman khatree.
There were no castes or social classes, no religious robes, no Brahmin or Kh'shaatriya.
ਦੇਉ ਨ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਗਊ ਗਾਇਤ੍ਰੀ ॥
day-o na dayhuraa ga-oo gaa-itaree.
There were no demi-gods or temples, no cows or Gaayatri prayer.
ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਨਹੀ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਪੂਜਾ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥
hom jag nahee tirath naavan naa ko poojaa laa-idaa. ||10||
There were no burnt offerings, no ceremonial feasts, no cleansing rituals at sacred shrines of pilgrimage; no one worshipped in adoration. ||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

There were no castes, no special robes, no priest and no warrior class.

There were no little gods and no temples, no sacred cows and no holy verses.

There were no offerings, no feasts, no bathing at holy rivers, and no one bowing in worship.

Every place of worship came later; the One came first.
The deeper layer

Priests, temples, sacred verses and pilgrimage, the forms of one tradition, all came later. A second tradition's forms stand right beside them in the next verse, so no path is singled out.

A Question to Sit With

Besides a place of worship, where do you feel close to the One?
