Sikhism·Raag Maaroo·Shabad 97
Verse 12 of 16

Every Breath and Every Bite

hukmay aadaanay aagaasee.
By the Hukam of His command, the sky is spread above.
hukmay jal thal taribhavan vaasee.
By His Hukam, His creatures dwell in the water, on the land and throughout the three worlds.
hukmay saas giraas sadaa fun hukmay daykh dikhaa-idaa. ||12||
By His Hukam, we draw our breath and receive our food; by His Hukam, He watches over us, and inspires us to see. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

By the flow of existence the sky was spread out overhead.

By it, living things make their homes in the water, on the land, and everywhere between.

By it we breathe and we eat, and by it the One watches over us and helps us see.

Every breath and every bite comes by the flow of existence.
The deeper layer

'Hukmay saas giraas': by the flow, our very breath and food. Even our seeing is given; the One both watches over us and opens our eyes.

A Question to Sit With

What is one breath or one bite you could pause to be thankful for?
