hukmay aa-i-aa hukam samaa-i-aa.
By His Command we come, and by His command we merge into Him again.
hukmay deesai jagat upaa-i-aa.
By His Command, the world was formed.
hukmay surag machh pa-i-aalaa hukmay kalaa rahaa-idaa. ||10||
By His Command, the heavens, this world and the nether regions were created; by His Command, His Power supports them. ||10||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
By the flow of existence we arrive, and by that same flow we return to the One.
That flow shaped the whole world we see.
The skies, this earth, and everything below were all set in place by it, and it holds them all up.
The same flow that brought you here will carry you home.
Here begins a long litany of 'hukmay' (by the Hukam), running to the end of the hymn. Coming and returning are both held within the one flow, so that arrival and departure are two sides of the same gentle movement.
A Question to Sit With
What comforts you about the idea of being carried home?
