Everyone Playing Their Part

sunnahu upjay das avtaaraa.
From the Primal Void, the ten incarnations welled up.
sarisat upaa-ay kee-aa paasaaraa.
Creating the Universe, He made the expanse.
dayv daanav gan ganDharab saajay sabh likhi-aa karam kamaa-idaa. ||12||
He fashioned the demi-gods and demons, the heavenly heralds and celestial musicians; everyone acts according to their past karma. ||12||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Out of the stillness rose the great heroes of the old tales.

Making the universe, the One spread it wide open.

The One shaped bright beings and shadowy ones, heavenly messengers and singers, and each one plays its part, shaped by all it has done before.

Each of us plays a part shaped by what we have done and choose.
The deeper layer

The many kinds of beings (dev, daanav, gan, gandharab), bright and shadowy ones, heavenly messengers and singers, all rise from the same stillness. Each acts according to its karma, the seeds of the past.

A Question to Sit With

How might a small kind choice today shape the part you play tomorrow?
