The Ladder of the Guru

gurmukh samjhai rog na ho-ee.
The Gurmukh understands, and does not suffer the disease.
ih gur kee pa-orhee jaanai jan ko-ee.
How rare are those who understand this ladder of the Guru.
jugah jugantar mukat paraa-in so mukat bha-i-aa pat paa-idaa. ||13||
Throughout the ages, they are dedicated to liberation, and so they become liberated; thus they are honored. ||13||

In plain words

When you turn toward the Guru and understand, the sickness of the separate self is healed.

Only a rare few know this ladder the Guru offers.

Those who keep climbing toward freedom, age after age, find it, and they are honored.

The Guru offers a ladder, and it leads to healing.
The deeper layer

'Gur kee paurhi' is the Guru's ladder, the step-by-step rise toward freedom. Ego is spoken of as a 'rog', a sickness to be healed, not a crime to be punished.

A Question to Sit With

What is one small step up your own 'ladder' you could take this week?
