In hope and desire, egotism and skepticism, the greedy man acts falsely. ||16||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

This mind of ours falls so easily in love with shiny, passing things.

Only a few grow wise enough to see through it.

When we get pulled about by wanting-more, by 'me first', and by worry, we end up chasing things that do not last, so it is worth stopping to notice.

Our mind loves shiny things; wisdom is learning to see through them.
The deeper layer

'Is man maa-i-aa ka-o nayhu ghanayraa': the mind's deep love of maya. Hope, desire, ego and doubt ('aasaa mansaa ha-umai sahsaa') pull the greedy toward false living, and the first step is to notice that pull in ourselves.

A Question to Sit With

What is something shiny that once pulled you, that you later saw did not matter much?
