The three qualities are pervasive; the Lord dwells in His home, the fourth state.

kaal bikaal kee-ay ik garasaa.
He has made death and birth into a bite of food.

The immaculate Light is the Life of the whole world. The Guru reveals the unstruck melody of the Shabad. ||4||

In plain words

The world spins through three moods, and the One lives in a fourth, still place beyond them.

The One has turned coming and going into something small, a single bite easily swallowed, nothing to fear.

One clear Light is the life of everything, and the Guru lets me hear a music that never stops playing underneath it all.

Beneath all the world's changing moods there is one steady, unbroken song.
The deeper layer

The three moods are the three gunas, the moving qualities of the world; the fourth state (chautha ghar, the turiya) is the still ground beyond them. In kaal bikaal kee-ay ik garasaa, death and birth become a single mouthful, small and nothing to fear. Anhad sabad is the unstruck melody, the music that plays under everything.

A Question to Sit With

When your moods change, what stays the same underneath?
