The Dust of the Sangat

ਊਤਮ ਜਨ ਸੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
ootam jan sant bhalay har pi-aaray.
Sublime and good are those humble Saints, the Beloveds of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮਾਤੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰੇ ॥
har ras maatay paar utaaray.
They are intoxicated with the sublime essence of the Lord, and are carried across to the other side.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰੇਣ ਸੰਤ ਜਨ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
naanak rayn sant jan sangat har gur parsaadee paa-i-aa. ||5||
Nanak is the dust of the Society of the Saints; by Guru's Grace, he finds the Lord. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The holy people, gentle and good, are dear to the One; their whole lives are soaked in its sweetness.

They are carried across to the far shore.

Nanak says: I would gladly be the dust beneath the feet of the Sangat of these holy people, for there, through the Guru's grace, the One is found.

We reach the far shore together, in the Sangat.
The deeper layer

Ren (dust) is an image of glad humility: to be the dust of the Sangat is to stand where wisdom rubs off. The closing note is grace (gur parsaadee), received as a gift. The path here is companionship.

Sant jan sangat is the Sangat — people gathered together to remember the One.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the people who bring out the gentlest, best version of you?
