The Sweet Flute of the Word

ਅਧਿਆਤਮ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ॥

Whoever does the deeds of the soul, day and night,
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜੋਤਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥

sees the immaculate Divine Light deep within.

Enraptured with the delightful essence of the Shabad, the source of nectar, my tongue plays the sweet music of the flute. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever tends to the soul, day and night, sees a spotless Light shining without a break inside.

The Word grows delicious on the tongue, sweeter than anything.

It is as if my whole being plays a flute of pure joy.

Tending your inner life turns the ordinary day into music.
The deeper layer

Adhiaatam karam are the deeds of the inner life. The Light is nirmal (spotless) and nirantar (unbroken, continuous). The flute (bayn rasaal) is a favorite Nanak image: the Word tasted as sweetness turns a person into an instrument the joy plays through.

A Question to Sit With

What practice makes your inside feel bright and clear?
