The Shabad is the Guru's Gift. It shall bring you lasting peace deep within; it shall always stand by you. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, every single moment, keep the Naam close.

The Word is the Guru's gift; it brings lasting peace deep inside, and it will always stand by you.

The Naam is a gift that stands by you, no matter what.
The deeper layer

Keep the Naam close moment by moment; the Word is a gift that stands by you.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Man mayray khin khin naam samhaal: O my mind, hold on to the Naam every single moment. Khin means an instant.

The Word is the Guru's daat, gift. It brings a peace that lasts deep inside. Sadaa nibhai tayrai naal: it will always stand by you. Think of a best friend who shows up on good days and bad days alike. The Word is that kind of friend.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what always stands by you when things get hard?
