Beyond My Reach, Yet Given To Me

ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਤਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
mayraa parabh at agam agochar gurmat day-ay bujhaa-ee.
My God is totally Inaccessible and Unfathomable; through the Guru's Teachings, He is understood.

sach sanjam karnee har keerat har saytee liv laa-ee. ||2||
True self-discipline rests in singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, lovingly attuned to the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My One is far beyond reach, beyond anything my senses can grasp. Through the Guru's teaching, the One gives me understanding.

True self-discipline is found in singing the One's praises, lovingly tuned to the One.

The best discipline is singing praise with a loving heart.
The deeper layer

The One is far beyond our reach, yet the Guru's teaching helps us understand.

Mayraa prabh at agam agochar: my One is far beyond reach, beyond anything we can see or touch. Yet gurmat day-ay bujhaa-ee: the Guru's teaching gives us understanding. It is like a guide who helps you see stars you could never find alone.

Then the verse names the best discipline. Sach sanjam karnee har keerat: truth, self-control and good deeds are found in singing the One's praise, keerat. Discipline here is gentle: singing with love, with our whole attention resting on the One.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you do that takes discipline and also brings you joy?
