Rituals Without The Heart

ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
baho karam karay satgur nahee paa-i-aa.
Performing all sorts of rituals, they do not find the True Guru.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਬਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
bin gur bharam bhoolay baho maa-i-aa.
Without the Guru, so many wander lost and confused in Maya.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਬਹੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥
ha-umai mamtaa baho moh vaDhaa-i-aa.
Egotism, possessiveness and attachment rise up and increase within them.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
doojai bhaa-ay manmukh dukh paa-i-aa. ||3||
In the love of duality, the self-willed manmukhs suffer in pain. ||3||

In plain words

Doing all kinds of rituals, they do not find the True Guru.

Without the Guru, so many wander lost and confused in Maya, the world's busy show.

Ego, the feeling of "mine," and clinging grow and grow inside them.

Loving a second thing in place of the One, the self-willed suffer pain.

A ceremony without the heart in it stays empty; the inward turn fills it.
The deeper layer

Many rituals without the Guru still leave you lost, while ego and "mine" keep growing.

Baho karam karay satgur nahee paa-i-aa means doing many rituals and still not finding the true Guru. The trouble lies in doing them without the heart, in any tradition. It is like saying "sorry" without meaning it. The words are there, but nothing changes inside.

Bin gur bharam bhoolay baho maa-i-aa: without the Guru, many get lost in the world's busy show. Ha-umai mamtaa, ego and "mine, mine," keep growing. Doojai bhaa-ay means loving a second thing instead of the One. That split is what leaves a person hurting.

A Question to Sit With

When has doing something with your whole heart felt different from just going through the motions?
