Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Whoever forgets such a precious Naam of the One brings shame on their family.
That family is left with no children, and the mother is left a widow, all alone.
Forgetting the Naam is like losing something priceless. Life can start to feel empty and cut off from its roots.
The verse uses very strong pictures to show how big this loss is. Tis kai kul laagee gaaree: that family loses its good name. It goes on to speak of a family line with no children, and a mother left alone. These are old, hard pictures of everything a family could lose.
The point underneath is simple. When we forget what matters most, we are like a tree cut off from its roots. The leaves may look fine for a while, but nothing new can grow.
The remedy is to hold the Naam close. Then our own days, and the lives joined to ours, stay full, green and connected.
What do you always want to remember, and how do you keep it close?
