The Perfect Guru demolishes the wall of egotism; servant Nanak has met the Lord, the Lord of the World. ||4||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The bride and her Beloved, the One, live together in one home, but a hard wall of ego, of "me, me, me," stands between them.

The Perfect Guru knocks down the wall of ego. Nanak, the servant, says: I have met the One, the Lord of the World.

You already live with the Beloved; only the wall of ego makes it feel otherwise.
The deeper layer

We already live with the One. Only a wall of "me, me, me" makes the One feel far away.

Dhan pir kaa ik hee sang vaasaa: the bride and her Beloved live together in one home. In Gurbani, the bride is each of us, and the Beloved is the One.

Vich ha-umai bheet karaaree: but a hard bheet, a wall, stands between them. It is made of ha-umai, ego, the part of us that thinks only about itself. It is like two people in the same room, each wearing headphones. They are close, but they cannot hear each other.

Gur poorai ha-umai bheet toree: the Perfect Guru knocks the wall down. Then Nanak meets banvaaree, the One who tends the whole world. The One was there all along; the wall only hid it.

A Question to Sit With

What is a wall you have felt between you and someone, and what helped it come down?
