Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
O mind, meditate on the One, Har, Har, Har, and you are set free.
Whoever listens to the Guru's words with their ears and meditates on them is carried across the world's wide, frightening ocean.
Remember the One and listen closely to the Guru's words, and you are carried across.
This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Jap man har har har nistarai: O mind, remember the One, and you are set free. Gur kay bachan karan sun dhi-aavai: hear the Guru's words with your ears and hold them in mind.
Listening deeply means letting the words sink all the way in, like the suniai, the listening, that Japji sings about. Then comes bhav saagar paar parai: you cross the bhav saagar, the wide ocean of the world. Think of a swimmer in a big pool who listens for the coach's voice and follows it to the far wall.
What is the difference between hearing something and listening to it?
