In plain words

The True Guru plants the Naam of the One, Har, Har, firmly inside.

Say the Naam of the One, O Sikhs of the Guru, my brothers and sisters. The One alone carries you across the world's wide, frightening ocean.

The Naam is planted by the Guru and grows in the heart, and then the One carries you.
The deeper layer

The Guru plants the Naam, and the One carries us across.

This is the pause line, the rahaa-o, the center of the shabad. Satgur har har naam darirh-aavai — the True Guru plants the Naam firmly inside. Like a gardener pressing a seed deep into the soil, so it can grow.

Har bolhu gur kay sikh mayray bhaa-ee — "say the Naam, Sikhs of the Guru, my brothers and sisters." Har bha-ojal jagat taraavai — only the One carries us across the wide ocean of the world.

We do the planting and the tending. But it is grace, a gift of kindness, that ferries us across.

A Question to Sit With

What is something good that was planted in you that has since grown?
