The mortal wanders lost in reincarnation, wearing various robes and clothes; when he is saved and protected by the Guru, then he finds the Truth. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The Word is beautiful. It pleases my mind.

Wandering and wandering, a person goes through many lives and wears many disguises. When the Guru protects them, they find the Truth.

The long search ends when you find what is true.
The deeper layer

The Word is beautiful, and when the Guru holds you, the long wandering ends in Truth.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Man bhaavai sabad suhaa-i-aa: the Word is lovely and pleases the mind. Bharam bharam jon bhaykh baho keenay: wandering and wandering through many lives, wearing many bhaykh, costumes and disguises. Gur raakhay sach paa-i-aa: when the Guru protects, one finds sach, Truth.

Think of trying on outfit after outfit before a big day, none of them feeling right. Then someone who knows you hands you the one that fits.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever searched a long time for something that was closer than you thought?
