In plain words

When a baby lives on milk alone, it cannot last without its milk.

The mother looks after it and pours milk into its mouth, and then it is full and content.

You are cared for in ways you never had to earn or even ask for.
The deeper layer

A baby lives on its mother's milk, and the mother feeds it until it is full.

Kheer aDhaar baarik jab hotaa: when the baby lives on milk, it cannot do without it. Saar samHaal maataa mukh neerai: the mother looks after it and feeds it. Tab oh taripat aghaa-ee: then it is satisfied.

The whole shabad rests on this picture of mother and baby, standing for the soul and the One. The baby cannot feed itself, and that helplessness is what draws the mother's care. Grace comes the same way, before we have done anything to earn it.

A Question to Sit With

When has someone taken care of you before you even asked?
