Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Rain down, dear cloud, and don't wait even a moment.

Rain down, beloved cloud, you who hold up my heart. You bring a joy that stays, and a glad, eager mind.

Some good things are worth calling for with your whole heart.
The deeper layer

When you long for something good, you call for it now, the way dry land calls the rain.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Malaar is the raag, or music, of the rainy season. Here the soul calls out like dry land to a monsoon cloud. Baras maygh jee til bilam na laa-o: rain down, dear cloud, don't wait even a moment.

The cloud stands for grace and the Naam. The verse calls it maneh sadhaaray, the support of the mind. Think of a hot, dusty day when the first drops finally fall. Everyone runs outside smiling. The longing here is hopeful. It says, "come now!" And the joy it brings, anad, stays.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you've waited for and longed to arrive?
