Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My Lord, my Beloved, You are as dear to me as my own breath of life.

Kind and caring One, show me Your favor: give me loving devotion and Your Naam.

The One you long for is already as close as your next breath.
The deeper layer

The One you love is as dear as your own breath, and loving devotion is the gift to ask for.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad.

Parabh mayray pareetam paraan pi-aaray: my Lord, my Beloved, the love of my very breath. The One is nearer than near, closer than our own breathing. Gurbani says this again and again.

Then comes the ask. Paraym bhagat apno naam deejai: give me paraym bhagat, loving devotion, and Your Naam. The ask is for love itself, as a gift.

Da-i-aal anoograhu Dhaaray: O da-i-aal, kind and caring One, show Your favor. The whole bond is tender, like a child asking a parent for a hug rather than a present.

A Question to Sit With

What in your life is so constant you barely notice it, like breathing?
