Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

It is the One's own nature to love those who love the One.

The One brings down those who speak cruelly about them and puts them low, under the One's feet. The One's glory shows everywhere.

Love is simply the One's nature, like the sun that cannot help but shine.
The deeper layer

Loving those who love the One is simply the One's nature, the way shining is the sun's.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Bhagat bachhal means loving to the devotee. Birdaari-o means it is the One's nature, a promise kept. The nindak is the slanderer, someone who spreads cruel words about others. Being put under the feet means their cruel words lose their power. Apuno jas vartaa-i-o: the One's glory spreads everywhere.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

When have unkind words lost their sting because you knew you were loved?
