Held Close By Grace

ਮਲਾਰ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
malaar mehlaa 5.
Malaar, Fifth Mehl:
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
gur kay charan hirdai vasaa-ay.
I enshrine the Lord's Feet within my heart;
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
kar kirpaa parabh aap milaa-ay.
in His Mercy, God has united me with Himself.
ਅਪਨੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਲਾਇ ॥

God enjoins His servant to his tasks.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
taa kee keemat kahee na jaa-ay. ||1||
His worth cannot be expressed. ||1||

In plain words

I keep the Guru's feet safe in my heart.

In kindness, the One Itself has joined me close.

The One gives those who serve their work to do.

How much this is worth, no one can say.

The One closes the distance, and you let it.
The deeper layer

Grace does the joining: the One draws you close and even gives you your work to do.

Gur kay charan hirdai vasaa-ay means I keep the Guru's feet in my heart, holding the teaching close with love. Kar kirpaa parabh aap milaa-ay: in kindness, the One Itself joins me close. Grace is a gift, like sunlight through a window. You don't make it. You open the curtains.

Apnay sayvak ka-o la-ay parabh laa-ay means the One sets those who serve to their tasks, so even work becomes a way of belonging. Taa kee keemat kahee na jaa-ay: the worth of this cannot be put into words.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt close to something bigger than yourself without even trying?
