Sikhism·Raag Malaar·Shabad 51
Verse 4 of 5

Both Sides Are Held By One

ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਕਰਤੇ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਰਜਾਇ ॥
dukh sukh kartay hukam rajaa-ay.
Pain and pleasure come by Your Command, O Creator Lord.
ਭਾਣੈ ਬਖਸ ਭਾਣੈ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
bhaanai bakhas bhaanai day-ay sajaa-ay.
By the Pleasure of Your Will You forgive, and by the Pleasure of Your Will You award punishment.
ਦੁਹਾਂ ਸਿਰਿਆਂ ਕਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ॥
duhaaN siri-aaN kaa kartaa aap.
You are the Creator of both realms.
ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ਜਾਂਈ ਤੇਰੇ ਪਰਤਾਪ ॥੩॥
kurbaan jaaN-ee tayray partaap. ||3||
I am a sacrifice to Your Glorious Grandeur. ||3||

In plain words

Pain and joy both come by Your will, Creator.

As You please, You forgive, and as You please, You give punishment.

You Yourself are the Maker of both sides.

I give myself to Your greatness.

The bright and the shadowed days are held by the same steady hands.
The deeper layer

The happy days and the hard days both come from the same Creator.

Dukh sukh kartay hukam rajaa-ay means pain and joy come by the Creator's will. Dukh is pain and sukh is joy. Bhaanai bakhas: by that will, the One forgives. Bhaanai day-ay sajaa-ay: by that same will, the One gives punishment, the hard lesson that sets crooked things straight.

It is like a coach who says "well done" one day and "try that again" the next. Both come from the same caring person. The One is the maker of both sides of life. The verse ends in awe: I give myself to Your greatness.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a hard time that later turned out to be teaching you something?
