Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O my mind, hold the Naam close, forever and ever.

Serving the perfect Guru, I have found it. It will stay with me here and in the world beyond.

The Naam is what travels with you.
The deeper layer

Hold the Naam close always; it stays with you here and beyond.

This is the rahaa-o, the "pause" line, the centre of the shabad. Naam samhaal means to cradle and look after the Naam, the remembrance of the One, the way you keep someone you love in mind even when they are out of the room. Gur pooray kee sayvaa paa-i-aa: it is found by serving the perfect Guru. Aithai othai nibhai naal: it goes along with you here and there, the one companion that carries over when everything else is left behind.

A Question to Sit With

What is something inside you that no one could ever take away?
